6th Grade Math September, 2020
Mrs. Manley
Dear Parents and Students,
Welcome.
I am very happy to be back for my fourth year at Queen of Heaven School. We will be studying the Common Core State Standards for Math and challenging ourselves to think deeply and grow in our understanding of math. The math content studied this year will add another layer to the foundation of skills you have built during the six years of elementary school. This year the layer will be a bit “deeper” and more tied to real world experiences that you will be experiencing in the years to come.
Math is fun! My goal this year is to instill a joy of learning in every student and I will strive to do this through many successes each and every day. Over the next couple of weeks, the students and I will get to know each other and get used to my routine and expectations in class. I will go slow and be thorough the first couple weeks of school to ensure every one of my students are organized and know exactly what is expected of them. We will start with math basics and math facts. Everyone is expected to know math facts starting sixth grade. Please give me and my classroom policies a chance to work for your child. I will truly do my best to make math fun this year. I do expect each student to be prepared and organized every day. Homework is very important and is a large part of your son/daughter’s grade. When homework is assigned, it is always written on our homework board in class, and I will also post it in our Google Classroom. I check the homework daily. Poor effort on the homework will affect the grade tremendously. I will also have binder checks to ensure everyone is staying organized. Again, being organized and able to find your current and past assignments is important in class.
My grading policy is very straight forward. Grades will be based on homework, entrance tickets, exit tickets, WIPs (work in progress), and tests. At the beginning of each class I will check the homework and often give a homework check grade. This daily homework will often be started in class and expected to be completed by the next class. The grade is determined by the effort put forth to have a complete assignment with correct procedures, not necessarily correct answers. Since we go over the homework first thing every class, failure to complete the assignment will result in a 0. Entrance and exit tickets will be unannounced problems, organization checks, etc, that will hold the students accountable for keeping up in class. WIPs will be mostly review assignments and the students will have 1 - 2 weeks to complete each one. If WIPs are not completed by the due date, the student may complete the assignment by the next class period for a reduced starting grade of 75%. After this day they will receive no credit for this assignment. Tests will be announced, reviewed, and discussed in advance. An end of trimester grade is computed by averaging all of their grades. Our classroom will follow all the Middle School Policy Rules given to them by their homeroom teacher.
Thank you for giving me the opportunity to be a part of your child’s education. I ask for your help this year as they work to reach their highest potential in this math class. You can help me by checking to see that they are keeping organized, doing their homework, and getting additional help if necessary. Please check your child’s grades in Google Classroom Online often. I will post all grades quickly so you will always know your son/daughter’s average. I do not require graded tests to be signed as I put them on Google Classroom quickly for you to see. If you or your child have a question about a grade or problem, please ask your child to come to me first for an explanation and answer. This will encourage the students to become responsible and confident. Only after your child has talked to me, if you still have questions, then please contact me via email. I can be reached at [email protected] .
Please read through my web page on the Queen of Heaven School’s website. You will find more information about me, my policies, and grading. Thank you for trusting me with your son or daughter this year. I take teaching very seriously, and will do my best to instill a joy of learning through success. Whether we are in the classroom, learning virtually, or learning using a hybrid method, 6th grade math will be a challenge met and conquered.
Please sign this letter and have your child bring it back to school no later than Friday, September 11th.
Mrs. Manley
